St. Barth's local Government
St Bart's Jurisdiction
St barths is a legal province of France and therefore adheres to most French laws. However, it was a Swedish country for one hundred years--from 1778 to 1878—and has retained many advantages of that period, like our free port and the absence of state taxation.
The local government is managed by an island council of 29 elected members and an elected mayor. The Government is primary administrated from the town hall, which is located at the point of Gustavia's Harbor.
The Island is in the process of becoming a C.O.M (Colectivité d'Outre Mers). This new judicial and political status will give local authorities more flexibility and control in managing St. Barths. To reach the town hall from the US , dial 011 590 590 29 80 40. From France or Europe dial 05 90 29 80 40 or by Email at odtsb@wanadoo.fr
Safety in St. Barth's
Crime is rare on St. Bart’s. Security is managed by the French Gendarmes, la PAF (Police des Airs et Frontieres) and the Local Police. Other private security services are also present on the Island and can be hired for special events.
